LeBron Comes Out

I'm not sure why people are so upset with LeBron over his decision to move to the Miami Heat. Yeah, he wasn't loyal and didn't decide to stay in Cleveland, but who would? Cleveland Ohio, guys, did you know that the number one attraction in Cleveland was LeBron James? I think the city needs to do a little soul searching before condemning a basketball player for not coming back to your crap hole city. It's not his fault and if you haven't seen this, The Cavaliers owner wrote a very cruel letter to the fans of Cleveland. You can read that Here

I thought it would be nice to See Lebron in a Knicks uniform, but after finding out that friends of LeBron, all-star players Dwanye Wade and Chris Bosh were moving to Miami, I had a funny feeling there was no way he was going anywhere other than South Beach.

The NY Times Conspiracy Theory as to why LeBron decided to go to Miami. Including Spike Lee.

What I don't understand, is why everyone is so angry at LeBron. He wants to win titles, not build a dynasty, not remain loyal to his city, and not play in one of the most pressured sports atmospheres in the world. Can you blame him? After this recent move, we all realize that LeBron is a coward, a traitor, someone who wants to put the pressure on others so he never has to endure it. Is that a problem? Of course not. How many people do you know, who don't claim responsibility for themselves? His decision only highlights his inability to be a leader. Maybe LeBron doesn't want to be the next Michael Jordan. Or maybe he does, but he's too dumb to realize what he's doing.

Two seasons ago when LeBron and The Cavaliers were defeated by The Orlando Magic in the semi-final. LeBron decided not to shake hands with the victors. Not only is LeBron a dumb coward, but he remains to be a non-sportsman, he's a business man in a basketball uniform, fooling the public in his media onslaughts and billion dollar man dreams. In the end, I don't think it's going to matter where he plays, he'll score a ton of points, probably win at least three championships and be declared as one of the better players to ever play the game. We understood that when first entered the league. But now that he'll be playing in a Heat uniform, does it really matter? I think we're just bitter that he didn't choose your team, because we all know you wanted to wear his name on your back.

Ay Yo Jews! Holy Rollers Trailer and a mini review

I think I posted about this a little while back. I was excited about it, Jews, drugs, that dumb blonde chick from Nick and Norah's Playlist. Sounds like my type of movie, and for the most part it was. I suggest you watch it, whenever that lonesome day on Netflix comes around.

It's a rarity that Jews, especially American Jews are portrayed as a "hard" or "tough guy" type, especially in television or cinema. Everyone wants to be Italian (Sopranos, Godfather) and somehow everyone in America is the slightest bit Irish (Gangs Of New York, The Departed). But even though most people have some kind of relationship to Judaism, it's usually dismissed and the Italian and Irish parts usually get a little more attention.

About the movie, after watching it, I didn't feel any cooler that I was Jewish. However, I felt a sense of acceptance within the world of cool drug movies. Great shots of the city both New York and Amsterdam, exciting soundtrack and above average acting. Jesse Eisenberg is the new Michael Cera. I can safely say that this film could be placed next to Maria Full Of Grace, 21 Grams, and of course "The Drug Movie"... Scarface.

This movie gets 3 Jewish Stars.

SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK (2009) written and directed by Charlie Kaufman

Charlie Kaufman writes strange films (Adaptation, Being John Malchovich, Eternal Sunshine). This time he directed one. Overtly depressing and morose, the film is a look inside a lonely and slightly senile playwright's attempt at creating his perfect masterpiece. Will he destruct before it is complete or will the people around him die before the play begins?

This video was created by an American student who took footage of crowd reactions around the country after the game winning goal scored by Landon Donovan against Algeria. I was in my living room.

Some are saying how this is reminiscent of "The Miracle" hockey game almost thirty years ago. I'm not sure if the intensity level was matched ( I wasn't yet born) but I feel like the 1980 USA Hockey Team's stakes were higher.

I'm putting my money on the US to beat Ghana later this afternoon. It looks like Uruguay is the next team to beat, they look tough but I think the US can do it. What do you think?

And just one more thing, I'm not regularly a soccer fan, so I'm sorry to the "real" soccer fans who are reading this and thinking "why does this douche think he can talk about my game?" Ever since I first watched the World Cup in 2002, I fell in love with the tournament and swear that it is arguably the best forum for sport.

The Zidane Headbutt will forever remain my most memorable World Cup Memory. It also made me fall in love with the Legendary Player. I've got a love for the World Cup.

I came across one of Sean's films on Free Williamsburg a great blog about things Williamsburg related. Check it out if you haven't.

This one was featured on FW. A mini-documentrary about a bowling hustler who currently lives in Staten Island NY. Is there another Staten Island? Probably not. He tells some stories, talks about hustling while his italian Staten Islandian charisma fuels the entire movie.

Going through Sean's other films I found a documentary I had watched a few months ago that caught my attention. Called "The Archive". "Paul Mawhinney was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. Over the years he has amassed what has become the world's largest record collection. Due to health issues and a struggling record industry Paul is being forced to sell his collection.

You know when wait too long to see a movie? Everyone around you seems to be talking about it and you have absolutely no idea what they're talking about? It almost diminishes the quality of the movie. You don't even want to like it.

I've always found that my local library has the best movie collection I have yet to see.... in movie collections. I recommend going to your library and discovering those movies before you quickly hate the movie because you hate yourself for not seeing it.

The Deer Hunter is an incredible film. I'm not very good with describing what makes a good film and what doesn't. But this guy does:

This weekend I went to a comic book convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. If you've never been to a comic book convention, comic book store, comic book anything, I highly suggest it. Growing up around comic book art (my brother is a comic nerd) My interest never spanned further than Wolverine and his awesome razor blade fingernails.

Conventions work like this: There are tables designated to different artists who sell books, original artwork, and sketch commissioned pieces of artwork for people who come to the shows. Think of 300 specialized and individual merch tables in a big convention hall. It's pretty cool and the majority of the people are really nice.

There are also people who come dressed up as different characters. Here is an example.

At the convention I stopped by Rick Peters table and picked up a copy of "Put The Book Back On The Shelf: a Belle and Sebastian anthology". The book is a collection of different artists compiling they're renditions of stories and artwork based on Belle and Sebastian Songs.

Want a copy? I have one autographed copy by Rick Peters whose comic is the very first and one of my favorites for his comic for the song "The State I'm In".

How can you obtain this wonderful piece of comic bookage?

I was watching a new episode of Run's House. The episode was about how Diggy (one of Rev's sons) got his labtop taken away for doing too much blogging and not enough homework. I went to check the blog and was pleasantly surprised.

I went to The Hold Steady show tonight in Ardsley New York @ LIFE/ The Place To Be

The venue reminded me of the typical Bar Mitzvah hangout spot. If you've been to one, you've been to them all. Arcade games, Flat Screen TV's, a bowling alley, and this big dancehall room.

The crowd was super middle aged, like Moms and Dad's who were definitely not in their early 30's. Less bumping around, which provided for more of a Bar Mitzvah atmosphere. I was wondering when they were going to bring out the chair and start the horah.

But this place wasn't Jewish friendly. No non-bread products for Passover! WTF LIFE?

Fear[s] Of The Dark- Trailer/ Mini Review / Focus On French Film @ SUNY Purchase

I want to give you a head's up on one of the better events that has become a annual success @ SUNY Purchase. During the weekend of April 9-11th, the Focus French Film Festival comes on campus, screens films, and gives away free food. Some of the best modern French Film is screened throughout the campus, most of the screenings occur at the PAC (Performing Arts Center) but some are screened in the Humanities Theater located in the Humanities Building.

One of the films being screened during this year's festival, is titled Fear[s] Of The Dark . A collection of animated short films that not only frighten the soul, but provide for some of the most beautiful cinematic artwork I've ever seen on a screen.

I personally am a fan of the newly digital animated wave of films that have become synonymous with movie animation over the past few years. As much as I hate to say it, I'm a sucker for Pixar and Dreamworks animated films. In the past, it was assumed that If you liked animation in your movies, you were usually under the age of thirteen. However, the recent development of cinematic animation has proved intelligent and thought provoking.

Fear[s] is a film I discovered about a year ago when I stumbled accorss a trailer. As soon as the trailer concluded, I made a mental note to search out this movie wherever it may be screening. A year passed, and I forgot the title, (I don't speak French) but found it one night at a Blockbuster in New Jersey and almost jumped out of my boat shoes.

I'm not going to provide you with all the reasons I think you should make every attempt to see this movie, but I will tell you this:

This Movie is scary When was the last time you were truly shaken in a movie theater? And don't tell me it was for Paranormal Activity, because that was a piece of shit.

It is artistically magnificient Computer animation, although most times can be breathtaking, the art in this film was done by hand. No Computers, but pencils and paper. Appreciate art? Watch the movie.

It's French We all like to be snobs sometimes. Now you can be a one in real life and actually know what your talking about.

I'm diggin. I really like that Ted Leo is almost 40 years old and still one of the coolest people on the planet. Here's a clip from earlier this year @ The Meat Locker.

He also has did a co-interview with Spin talking to Paul Weller (The Jam) they talk to each other.... about each other. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to react when reading two artists conversation about how great the other one is, but I didn't mind this one too much.

If you have a couple hours to sit down and watch an incredible documentary, make sure to watch this one. The first time I heard about Noam Chomsky was in a NOFX song. I wish I would have looked him up a tad bit sooner.

I'm too tried to give a description so heres one from Wikipedia!:

Mr Warmth: Don Rickles

When I was 12 years old, I bought Chris Rock's comedy album, "Bigger and Blacker". Although I probably understood a fourth of the jokes on the album, I played that disk until the plastic wore off. He had these amazing commentaries on race and modern culture that for some reason struck a chord with a pre-pubescent white boy from suburban New Jersey. How can anyone not love "No Sex In The Champagne Room"? Not this guy.

I've been enamored with standup comedy ever since I bought that album.

A few years ago I came across this documentary and immediately fell in love. Not only because the movie had all these hotshots stroking Don Rickles ego for an hour and a half. But I couldn't stop watching, every time it came on HBO, I was hypnotized. It's strange because most of the film is composed of other people telling stories about their relationships. Something that should be boring. The film discusses his life and upbringing, his time in the Navy and how he slowly became one of comedies all time greats.

I've watched this clip numerous times. Not only because the clip is a comedic gem, it's this immaculate time capsule of the coolest generation of celebrity that has ever existed. Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Neil Armstrong, and Ronald fuckin Regan! Can you imagine what that after party looked like? Dean Martin was smoking on the show!

The Eighties didn't slow him down like some entertainers (see: The Rolling Stones) He's almost seventy years old in that clip and as fresh as he ever was. Making fun of Whoopie will never not be funny.

Hanging out with Conan and poking fun at Andy Richter, just like he should be. Even when the heckler screams out, he puts her down like it was scripted in his act. There is something so special that lacks in contemporary comics.

Still making fun of Regis. I love this man so much. I hope one day I can see him perform. I better hurry up.

The Soothsayer Satire: Sam Schachter Studies? by Devin Doyle

According to the Purchase College Registrar, major events coordinator and campus personality, Sam Schachter, is going to become a major here at Purchase, starting in the fall of 2010. Students will get the opportunity to earn a four-year undergraduate degree in the study of the young man’s biography, his opinions on everything from music to sports, and his future ambitions in life.
Many prospective Purchase students are relieved that a college is finally offering the major they have been looking for. High school student, David Deytraype, from Forest Hills, NY, is hoping to study that major next year as a freshman. “I have been a huge fan of Schachter’s since I was twelve years old,” says Deytraype. “I really hope to work for Schachter in some way after college. I even grew a beard like his!” Nebraska high school student, Alan Spangreen, won a $25,000 scholarship to Purchase after writing an essay entitled, “Schachter Schock,” which argued that Culture Shock should be renamed after the event’s sole organizer. “I’m honored that the scholarship board allows me to come to Purchase to pursue my dream,” Spangreen tells The Independent. “My financial situation wouldn’t have allowed it otherwise.”
Many undecided Purchase students have now found their niche in this new major. Ethan Kahn, sophomore undecided, thought of majoring in Gender Studies, but instead has decided to major in Sam Schachter. “You know, there’s really nothing you can do with a Gender Studies degree, but the world is your oyster if you have a degree in Sam Schachter,” Kahn says.
A student majoring in Sam Schachter will be offered a highly comprehensive curriculum including such classes as:

• “Introduction to Sam Schachter” (3 credits) An introduction course, which spends two semesters detailing the basic history of Schacter’s twenty plus year life, along with some of his core values.
• “Applied Theories of Schachter” (2 credits) Studies all the decisions Schachter has made at Purchase as a coordinator and organizer and compares them to major events coordinators in 20th century world history.
• “Queer Schachter” (3 credits) Taught by the renowned Gender Studies professor Dr. Laura Henlock, this course re-contextualizes Schachter from gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender perspectives
• “LoveSchack Practicum” (4 credits) A senior-only class in which students develop theses of their own based on opinions found in Schachter’s blog.

The Registar is also considering offering a minor called “Steve Sabel” in which students will juxtapose the careers of Sabel and multiple Presidential nominee Bob Dole

My trip to Israel

I usually don't do "personal posts" on the blog, but because I was away for so long, and thus could not post for sometime, I thought I would explain and document what had taken up 15 days of my of my life. If your expecting a post about how great and wonderful Judiasm is, you can stop reading now because this is not what I'm going to discuss. Instead, I want to show you a few video clips and pictures from my trip. I'm not going to be able to cover everything, we did about 50 activities in 10 days, and it would take a week to upload and describe everything, so I'm going to describe the personal highlights of my trip.

The first full day of the trip took us to the Old City in Jerusalem, to be more exact on top of King David's fortress. During our time at the castle, we ate some challah bread, did some horah (dancing), and of course, took some pictures. Here are a few:

Throughout the trip, I made sure to take 10-40 second video clips of most places. This is a video of the Horah on top of the Old City Fortress:

We then left for what most call, "the most holy place in the world", in the old ruins of Jerusalem. Not only because of it's significance to Judaism but also because both Muslims and Christians venture to this location from all over the world to pray and interact with the location. We went for the Western Wall, or what some call The Wailing Wall. A wikipedia description to describe why:

"The name “Wailing Wall”, and descriptions such as "wailing place" appeared regularly in English literature during the 19th century.[4][5][6] The name Mur des Lamentations was used in French and Klagemauer in German. This term itself was a translation of the Arabic el-Mabka, or "Place of Weeping," the traditional Arabic term for the wall.[7] This description stemmed from the Jewish practice of coming to the site to mourn and bemoan the destruction of the Temple."

We then proceeded to walk around more of the ruins, and receiving profuse amounts of information about the sight. Our tour guide (Josh) which you'll probably see in at least one of the pictures was not only one of the most educated incredible human beings I've interacted with but one hell of a intelligent guy. I think I've only retained 10% of the things we were told. This country is rich with history stemming from literally a thousand years ago.

Next stop was to another marketplace. Those Jews, they love their marketplaces. I guess you need somewhere to go if grocery stores are unavailable. These pictures were taken on a Friday afternoon, right before Shabbat where the majority of the country comes home to pray, eat, and be with their families:

Not only does this trip provide for educational and religious purpose, it puts you in some great situations. This guy standing next to me, came up to me at an event telling me that he somehow knew me. Now this didn't seem so outrageous because I knew that he was in a Birthrite program, he was around my age, but I had never seen this person before. He told me that someone told him from back home (Yorktown, NY USA) that this guy with a bald head and beard would be in Israel, so he asked if I was him, and it turned out I was. Just a quick little fact, Jews make us .02 of the world's population. So statistically, it was meant to be that we'd find each other.

The next day we woke up super early to take a trip to a place called Lifeline For The Old where people disabled or in their old age are create arts and crafts. The members make toys, buttons, clothing, Judiaica (fancy jewish stuff) and the proceeds go to keeping the place open. Now this may seem like some Happy Gilmour gimmick, but let the website explain:

I wish there were more of these places in The United States. It's amazing how creative these people were and the potential that anyone has instead of rotting away in an old age home. Serving a purpose in life gives more of a reason to keep on living, despite how awful life can be at times, and this place was a perfect example.

If we had to rate the destinations on our trip, this next location would be my #2. Yad Vahshem, which is the Holocaust memorial in Israel, it was not only a museum, but a monument center, education spot, and mourning space. I cannot explain how much power this place emitted. Now, most of you have heard of the Holocaust and I hope that all of you believe that it happened, but being here was more compelling then any synagogue or religious destination we visited the entire trip. There were no bodies or explicit human remains being showcased, but I've never had such a heartfelt connection to being Jewish in my entire life. I had visited the national museum in Washington DC, but this was levels above the rest.

I personally had family killed in the Holocaust, so being taught about it at times can feel redundant, but at this place I could not obtain enough information on the subject. So much terror, agony, and unspeakable crimes that occurred, it's difficult to wrap your head around why or how it happened. Every-time I learn something new, it makes me question how something so preventable could have been stopped. But I strongly encourage anyone who hasn't learned about this time in history and may not believe that it "was as bad as people made it out to be" look a little harder. These are only words, make an attempt to at least once in your life visit the museum or a monument. It's not only important for Jews, but for human beings to recognize what happened and to remember.

Throughout the trip, there is this kind of over exhausting mood of death. We're in the desert, recollections of the Holocaust, and the constant reminder that we're still in a war zone. And although all of this is a part of the country, there still is happiness and joy to be had all over the place.

We then took a trip from Jerusalem into the desert, to a Bedouin camp. A Bedouin is an Arab person who calls themselves Israeli. They usually live in rural areas like the desert or in compounds almost like outdoor camp areas. While at the camp we got to ride camels, eat incredible food, and venture out into the desert, where we had bonding experiences with ourselves. I didn't take any pictures of the bonding, but here are some of the camels and Bedouin experiences:

From there we rode down a little more south to my #1 destination of the trip, Masada. It may not seem like an incredible place, but Masada is a wonder that I have seen nothing like. Originally a fortress and community for Jews way back when, It served as living area as far back as 70 CE (no one lives there currently) Anyway, I've heard stories throughout my life about how amazing it was and the importance it has had in my life has been repeated to me since I can remember. Just like every other description i've mentioned before, you just need to be there:

This was taken at the top of the mountain where in a large space of rocks where you can listen to an echo if you speak loud enough. I can't hear it, can you?

The Dead Sea is notoriously one of the coolest places to visit in all of Israel. If you hadn't noticed because of the high salinity levels, it's extremely easy to float. However, because the salt is so powerful, if you decide to let the water near your eyes or open wounds, it burns for days. Luckily that didn't happen to me, but I did hear about someone diving in head first. Crazy tourists!

We then drove up to Tiberius and stayed in a Kibbutz where the food was delicious and the sights were magnificent. Tiberius is located in northern part of the country near the Kinerit, which is the main water source for all the country. We rode bicycles into the reserve, went bird watching, and saw the craziest rainbow in the history of rainbows. Afterwards, we spent time in the spiritual town of Tsfat, where mostly Kabbalah is practiced. Some wacky dudes over there, but also some delicious treats:

The following days were spent down in Ashkelon, near Tel Aviv. I wish I would have spent more time walking around, but unfortunately the trip did not allow us to do so.

Words, adjoining pictures and media can only speak so loud and describe so well. The experience's I had endured while on this trip made a huge impact and left a colossal mark on me not only as a Jew, but as a human being. There is an appreciation of life that I know I received from going on this trip. It's not about Arabs vs. Jews or donating money back to the country, and I know many of you have heard this is what it's about. To me, it was about getting face deep into a culture and only coming up to breathe when necessary. People have been asking me about the trip, and I'm left speechless, I just can't express to them how incredible of a time I had. If your a Jew please take advantage of this amazing opportunity, and if your not Jewish and your thinking about going on vacation, choose Israel, it will change your life.

Port Chester Radio's/ Greg Baldwin's Top Albums Of The Decade

"If there's been one emblematic shift in pop since 2000, it has been the digitization of music. The onslaught of the MP3 has forever changed the way music is produced and how we consume it. There are no more labels, aside from the "Big Six" conglomerates, and anyone with access to the Internet can virtually track down and download any song ever recorded for free. Music, in my opinion, has actually benefitted from this.

Recording technology has been ripped from the hands of the elite few. Anyone with ProTools and an M-Audio microphone can record full-lengths in their bedroom. The reason I think music has benefitted from this, at least in terms of quality, is that musicians are more obliged to compose the most stimulating songs their private hearts can muster, otherwise their music never rises to the surface of the murky swamp that is the Independent Music.

But that's another story. This story is about the albums from 2000-2009 that floated up to the slimy surface and reached my eardrums . Considering I was twelve years old when the century turned, these years have been formidable to say the least, and the albums I list here have all had a profound effect on me. My favorite albums of the last decade aren't necessarily the ones that broke barriers or the ones ones that challenged old formulas, but ones that revitalized old formulas with new Turns.

Before you start scrutinizing my list, criticizing my taste, and scouring it for emissions, please know that these were just the first seven that came to mind."

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes 2008: In the compressed, auto-tuned and dry world of the late 00's, Fleet Foxes break onto the scene with vocals drenched in reverb and dynamics. This five piece from Seattle takes bits and pieces from all the greats of the 60's. From the Beach Boys to Dylan, their organic sound sets them apart from the overly produced and electric bands that dominate the rock music scene. Very impressive for a debut record, and I look forward to the follow-up!

American Idiot - Green Day 2004: In 2000 Green Day releases Warning with dismal reviews and album sales (I thought it was great). They're leaving their late twenties and entering their early thirties. Wives and kids. Billie Joe is getting fat and it looks like Green Day is on their last legs... Nope! I know this pick is going to get a lot of shit. It is very easy to hate Green Day with the aftermath of American Idiot. The hot topic girls who were born in 1994 suddenly cramming in any and every venue to see their 'new favorite band'. The unimaginable times you heard "Wake Me Up When September Ends" on the radio and how bad the music video was. We (my generation) remembers Dookie, so the comparison is quite surprising. But with all the publicity aside, If you actually listen to the record straight through(...have you ever even done that?) American Idiot proves to be one of Green Day's best releases. It packs the punch that dookie had and it's been ten years later! Green Day has managed to reach generations. While most think American Idiot is an anti-bush record, its really not. It tells the story of teenagers growing up in middle class america, doing drugs, having sex and identifying themselves. ...Kind of like DOOKIE! The only difference is, Billie Joe is writing this with a perspective having grown up and watching his kids now do the same.

Elephant - The White Stripes 2003: Nothing like music recorded to tape... but in the 2000's? Jack White is a sucker for the old school and so am I. This record is filled with riff heavy jams and a rock and roll approach long abandoned since Zeppelin. While 'White Blood Cells' put them on the map, Elephant solidified their prominence and for Jack as a songwriter, producer and arranger. No frills, this record just rules.

The Lemonheads - The Lemonheads 2006: The Lemonheads had their hay-day in the 90's and many would have thought that Evan Dando would melt into an old fart pot-head in the 00's, but out of the blue comes their self titled ninth album. While considered a bit of a reunion, the only original member to return was Evan Dando, but with former members of the Descendants, Bill Stevenson on drums and Karl Alvarez on bass you, can't really go wrong! Not to mention additional guitar leads by J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. and Garth Hudson from THE BAND on keyboards! Names aside, this record has catchy uptempo pop tunes galore. Kicking off the album with 'Black Gown' clocking in at just over two minutes, I was instantly hooked. Dando was able to capture the essence of what made his 90's hits and transfer them to a somewhat timeless record for the 00's.

Guitar Romantic - Exploding Hearts 2003: This debut (and last) record released by The Exploding Hearts is such a great representation of the powerpop revival in the early 2000s. This lo-fi release pays its respects to some of Britain's bests, from Elvis Costello to the Clash. I really don't know the specifics of their recording process but these songs sound like they were barbarically recorded to tape in a garage in 1978! Unfortunately all their potential future releases were cut short when in July 2003, while on the road, their van flip on interstate 5 on their way to San Fransico killing three of the four band members. This record is only a glimpse of what would have been had they continued to write more songs. Their story is tragic but their tunes will not be forgotten!

Sam's Town - The Killers 2006: The Killers are certainly a guilty pleasure of mine and I'm not afraid to admit it. I'll hang with the 15 year old girls who think Brandon Flowers is hot because... well... I may think so too. But with all that aside, Sam's Town has some incredible substance for a sophomore album. While still synth heavy like Hot Fuss, it has the balls that Hot Fuss lacked. When You Were Young is certainly an incredible anthem that kicks the pants off the listener leaving the question, "this is the killers!?" Flowers' wobbly vocal approach captures a genuine delivery in his lyrics. He captures a lot of the feelings and emotions of '20-somethings' and their families living in middle class America. In an interview Flowers once said about Born To Run, "I didn't see New Jersey in my mind when I listened to it. I saw an America that I recognized - and that I had neglected". It's clear he took that message to heart and wrote with that inspiration in mind.

Neptune City - Nicole Atkins 2007: A New Jersey native, Nicole Atkins is truly a diamond in the ruff. Her voice sounds like it traveled through time from the 50's, 40's or even 30's. Her sultry range and vibrato is a refreshing change from the tuned pop princess' we hear today. While this list is certainly a sausage-fest, Nicole can roll with the rest of these fellas and then some. She has been said to be the female equivalent of Roy Orbison. Her epic and climactic song structures keeps the heart racing. Her songwriting is timeless and tasteful. What I find surprising is that her music can be so cross generational. The last time I saw her perform the audience's age ranged from 16-50. She plays the guitar, she belts like an angel and she writes songs you wish were about you.

Phantom Punch - Sondre Lerche 2007: The only foreigner on my list! Sondre Lerche of Norway definitely has a way with words. English being his second language, Lerche can still deliver his lyrics (all in english) with the most elegant voice. Influenced from Abba to Pet Shop Boys to Steely Dan, Sondre Lerche has been doing his homework when it comes to pop songwriting. Phantom Punch is a bit of an edgier release compared to his previous Duper Sessions LP which featured more jazz. This collection takes his whimsical pop songwriting and cranks up the gain. This may also be the most compressed record I've ever heard. It is loud and is almost used as an effect. The drums punch, the vocals push and guitars wail all while still being considered 'pop' music. It's not very often that you hear major and minor seven chords with great tube gain. Lerche's falsetto is certainly a tool he uses to his advantage. Why belt a note when you can whisper it? What makes this record truly unique is how tactful and delicate it can be while being so loud and raw.

Stay What You Are - Saves The Day 2001: This record has been around long enough to say that it has certainly been influential on the music of today. This dark collection is what got a lot of my generation through their awkward high school days. Honestly, Stay What You Are is fantastically straight forward and really speaks for itself. enough said.

Sha Sha - Ben Kweller 2002: What a fantastic collection of quirky Alt. tunes. This energetic release has one catchy song after the other and they have become staples (at least for me) of our teenage years. Ben slightly dives into a country feel with tunes like 'Family Tree' but he takes queues from the likes of Tom Petty to Pavement for his rockin' numbers like Commerce, TX and No Reason. While some of the songs are quirky he can write some serious jams as well like 'Lizzy' and 'In Other Words'. Ben's pallet of songwriting dips into so many previous decades, from the 60's - 90's and does such a great job of putting it all together.

Merriweather Post Pavillion - Animal Collective 2009: As you may see from this list, I am a fan of bands with guitars, but this record has none to my knowledge. Merriweather Post Pavillion took the songwriting, melodies and harmonies that made the Beach Boys and completely re-created it for the 21st century. Usually I'm turned off by 'musical landscapes created by synth' bullshit, but the timbres used to layer the backing tracks are truly impressive. What puts this apart from a lot of the other typical brooklyn noise/synth/experimental groups is the songwriting. Lyrically, melodically and musically it proves to be solid all around. I remember asking my mom once what made Sgt. Pepper so great when it came out and she said, "No one had ever heard anything like that before". I feel the same could be said for Merriweather Post Pavillion, only time will tell if it can capture audiences decades later.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Wilco 2002: The first time I heard this record I thought how absurdly pretentious it was, but listen after listen I realized Jeff Tweedy and the rest of Wilco put their credibility on the line with this adventurous take of arrangements and created a fantastic record of great substance. Wilco had been such a straight forward alt. country band, but with this record, they threw conventional techniques to the side and arranged what would be typical pop tunes into experimental masterpieces. 'I Am Trying To Break Your Heart' the opening track from the record may be one of the most haunting tracks of this decade. Wilco used everything but the kitchen sink for this record... and I wouldn't be surprised if they played that too.

Boys And Girls in America - The Hold Steady 2006: Lyrical authenticity is a hard thing to come by in rock and roll music when most songs are about love or lack thereof, but The Hold Steady were able to capture the most basic of American pastimes, emotions and dilemmas and put them to song in Boys and Girls in America. Though it seems that Kerouac's "On The Road" was certainly the fuel to help the creative juices flowing, ("There are nights when I think Sal Paradise was right, 'Boys and Girls in America, have such a sad time together'"). These Springsteenesce anthems dive into the topics of sex, parties, relationships, drinking and everything that is the typical focus of... you guessed it: boys and girls in america! Finn has a knack for creating memorable characters that remain a fixture the entire record. Musically, they embody everything about being an american bar band. Play it loud and play it like you mean it. Perhaps if I had heard this record at a different place and a different time it may have squeezed by my radar, but it truly captured my life as I entered my twenty somethings.

Is This It? - The Strokes 2001: In the early 2000's New York was in dire need of a new act to represent such a fine city. In October 2001 they found one. The Strokes embraced a forgotten New York punk attitude and a knack for writing straight forward catchy dance numbers. Their stripped down approach to songwriting gave them the ballsy aesthetic that set them apart from so much music at the time. What I find most impressive about this record is that there are NO harmonies. Not ONE. Julian Casablancas' distorted vocal approach had no need for back-ups. It was raw, and best of all, these songs sound equally great live! New York City Cops was quite controversial after the wake of 911, but isn't that what being a NYC rock band is all about? This particular album put them on the map and New York again as well. Is This It laid down the ground work for the New York indie 'style' for the rest of the decade, whether you Williamsburgh hipsters like to admit or not.

We All Belong - Dr. Dog 2007: It was a typical weeknight my junior year of college when I was dragged along to the student center for a band I "had to see". Needless to say, I was left jaw dropped. Dr. Dog were on the road promoting their record "We All Belong" which captures everything timeless about rock and roll music. With an uncanny sense of dynamics, they can play ever so delicately one moment and blow the roof off the next. Recorded to 24 track tape, they were able to capture the gritty sounds of a real band. From the rustic "Alaska" to the peppy "My Old Ways", Scott and Toby both trading off singing lead, keeps the album fresh from song to song. "We All Belong" the climactic last track which shares the name of the record provokes that very message. Their slightly out of tune harmonies are a refreshing reminder that not all needs to be autotuned in the new millennium. Songwriting is a craft that has fallen to the wayside now-a-days as an 'image' or 'name' takes center stage, but We All Belong stays true to the musical integrity of what a band really is; a collective of musicians each contributing for the benefit of the song.

Brown Is The New Green- A film review

In the film Brown Is The New Green, a film about George Lopez and the rapidly growing Latino consumer market. Director, Jennifer Kobzik uncovers the struggle of George Lopez from poor boy to rich megastar while also observing the fastest growing minority in the United States. Although the film jumps from topic to topic, it conveys important subjects of race in America, a topic that is usually scene as taboo and unrequited.

George Lopez who is the most successful Latin American television actor in history is a celebrity who causes controversy not only because of his race but also because of his comedic material. Personally, I have never been humored by his work, for the sole reason of not being able to relate to his comedy. However, he does appeal to millions of Americans, a majority being Latinos who thoroughly enjoy his work as a comedian and an actor, for the sole reason of being able to understand his perspective. He’s had success as a comedian, writer, and an actor.

The documentary divulges information about Lopez’s early life, abandon by his parents and being raised in a non-traditional “Latino household”. Where traditionally and stereotypically, the father and mother are present throughout a child’s development. Critics of Lopez’s work attack him for using his unfortunate childhood as humor to entertain audiences, while painting pictures of non-positive Latino stereotypes. Lopez replies, “I’m just stating the facts”. He overcame hardships and turmoil to become one of Hollywood’s most respected and successful stars, an accomplishment that was even more difficult because he looked like a Latino.

The film also describes how the lack of a “real Latino” style and look is hidden in most media, including magazines, film, and television. Although Latin Americans do have access to television channels like Telemundo, most argue that these are not relatable. How could they be? Just because characters speak Spanish does not mean a Latin American can associate with what is being projected to them, a common misunderstanding to non-Latino’s, including myself. This argument is a major topic of the film, because it allows the audience to comprehend how Latino’s want to be incorporated into American society and not left out or used as a focus groups to sell products. Why should advertising agencies create Latino based ads when Latino’s are living in America? Do we have Italian, Irish, or Japanese commercials? Being Latino is an illegitimate term to begin, stemming from government documents homogenizing different groups of people into one. Because, the fact remains clear, most Latino’s do not call themselves Latino’s but Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Columbian, Argentineans, etc.

Latino’s are one of the most profitable consumer markets in the country. They spend more than any other minority group, and it’s become apparent that corporations and advertising agencies are also making money, taking advantage of these statistics. Even in the last election, Latinos are increasingly becoming a highly influential group.

I would advise people who may not be humored by George Lopez to make it a point to watch this film. It is important to understand Latino culture, not only because 1 in 6 of Americans are Latino but also to better understand the culture and media’s neglect of a people who are as American as you and I.

"Born Into Brothels" Review

I just wrote this as a response for a class called "Global Media, Local Cultures". I think it came out pretty well. If you've seen the movie, I'd love your thoughts. If you have yet to see it, please do.

Born into Brothels, a documentary film about a photography program for the children of Indian prostitutes was one of the most compelling and insightful documentaries I have ever seen. Set in the town of Sonagachi, just like Amsterdam’s red light district but more run-down and poverty stricken. Scenes of despair and empowerment are shot throughout. Although, the title suggests a more problematic situation, the documentary brings to life a community that usually has little to no awareness.

Director and photographer, Zana Briski who was originally stationed in India to photograph Prostitutes, quickly befriended their children from the numerous visits she had taken over the past five years while shooting. She began a program to give back to the community of children, who some, had never seen cameras before. The documentary highlights six of the students who were enrolled in the program. The students were given cameras to take photographs of the city, which would allow them to create their own artwork at no cost, an opportunity they would have never received without the program. The documentary gives the audience a look into each students work, showcasing different photographs while giving a biographical background of each student. Although all of the students are children of prostitutes, some are more fortunate than others. Some of the children are expected to “join the line” a term that expresses the disparaging fact of being forced into the life of a prostitute. However, some of the children are more likely (the males) to have an opportunity to go away to schools to continue their educations.

One of my favorite scenes in the film comes when the director who is also one of the main characters in the film, takes the students on a field trip to the beach. The beach town that is outside of the city, is a place where none of the students have ever visited. They are instantly overjoyed and ecstatic, snapping pictures of the landscapes and sceneries. This scene exemplifies the innocence of the children in a perfect manor, allowing the audience to become aware of the children who are subject to daily problematic situations that eventually lead to lives of unfortunate circumstances. The children swim in the ocean, run around on the beach and for once, are allowed to act like children. The group packs up and leaves once the sun retreats and fall asleep on the bus ride home to awake to the nighttime overcrowded city slums that they call their homes.

This film resonates not only with emotional compassion but on a social awareness level as well. Some critics may say that this film or this program does not benefit the community. In some ways it does not, It will not lift the community out of poverty or erase the confines of prostitution that have taken over the city. However, it has created opportunity that could not be found before this program was conceived, and I believe that is a enough for this film to be cited as a relevant and an important piece of filmmaking.

A few things compel me to stop and post on the blog, but when that something/s does/do appear, I find it necessary to post it.

I came across the singer/guitar player of Tokyo Police Club's Blog and found an acoustic cover of a wonderful song by the band The Harlem Shakes. Although the name sounds super silly and an attempt to by ironic. What Brooklyn indie band is really doing or knows how to do the Harlem Shake? It's a song that in any way shape or form will make you say "hey, that's a pretty good song!". Check it out!

Hey Ladies! The New York Times reported about a new Net Flix type company called Rent The Runway where you can rent expensive dresses at cheap costs. Just don't spill anything on them because you gotta pay for it, hunnie.

What is a better marketing tool than a T-shirt? I can't think of one! Can you? A company called The Music Tee is creating an album art t-shirt where, when you buy one, you get a free digital download along with the purchase! Brilliant! My favorite so far is The Monsters Of Folk .... Just in case you were wondering, my birthday is coming up!

Speaking of Monsters Of Folk, who recently put out their new album last week which has quickly become one of my favorites of the year. I got a chance to see them last night. After seeing Where The Wild Things Are on Sunday, I came to the conclusion that the trailer, featuring that Arcade Fire song "Wake Up" was actually better than the movie itself. I can't really explain why I didn't enjoy the movie. Maybe it was because every scene was scored by Karen-o or because the movie really didn't give me a sense of childhood. What was my childhood like? I don't know but it sure was better exemplified by the trailer and not the film.

Spike Jonze made an incredibly beautiful visual film, but I got lost in the movie a few times. I'm not sure if that was supposed to happen, because the actual book itself was only 25 pages. How do you make a full length movie out of a 25 page children's story book? I guess that's what it looks like.

While at home, I turned on the television to notice that fox news was interviewing Rush concerning Obama's speech last night regarding healthcare and that Harvard professor who got arrested recently. Rush contributed his two cents while my jaw remained open for about six minutes. I wondered to myself, is this man serious? So I started searching and found these enlightening clips of one of the most famous media personalities in America. And apparently, he is.

First Post from Justin: Left for Buenos Aires 6/16

[[First post disclaimer: I'm going to use this space to give some details as to what I'm doing and where I'm going throughout my travels in Argentina for the next 5 months--though I can't say how often I'll update it yet...or how interesting I will be...]]

My flight today from LaGuardia was scheduled for 4:55 pm. I got there with plenty of time to spare and was feelin' good. Boarding time was 4:25 and I was seated at the gate well before that.
4:25 roles around...the arriving flight lets out? I thought, don't they have to clean that shit before we go on? Oh well I guess that won't take long. 15 minutes pass...still no boarding. Announcement comes, "okay", I think "first class kids time..." Nah, they have to pressurize the plane or something before we can go on it "You should be able to board in 10-15 minutes". 15 minutes passes and the flight has been delayed to 5:10. Shit! eh, actually I'll still make it without a doubt to Atlanta in time for my next flight. Turns out we end up boarding at 5:10, not departing. We get on very quickly because they wanted to speed it up so we could leave quickly so those with international connecting flights would arrive on time (me). They hurried everyone to get seated so we could leave, we did. We start rolling and the safety video plays and ends. Soon it's 6:00. Captain isn't sure what is going on...6:15: something about congestion of flights in weird weather "even though the weather looks fine around here". They give us water and apologize for the plane being around 90 degrees. The air conditioning isn't working because we aren't moving and it's really hot outside (hottest ny day yet? mm?). Then to calm us down some more they decide to put a movie on and give out headsets for free. The movie is called "17 again" and stars Zac Efron and that guy from Friends. No thanks. The kid behind me kicks and pulls and I get hotter from annoyance. I'm sweating profusely and at this point I just want to get moving for the air conditioning. We finally depart at 7:15 and our arrival time is 9:15 pm. My next flight leaves at 8:35 pm.
Apparently now in an airplane you can get WiFi once your'e over 10,000 feet? Weird but pretty sweet I guess. I quickly took my laptop out and checked my next flight status which displayed "On Time". Arrrg, the one time I don't want to see that. Next flight? 24 hours later.
So now here I ended up after the shitty customer service line at the airport that had no clear beginning or end and nobody knew what they were doing or what the line was. I was sent to the Marriott Courtyard with a discount: $79 for the night...woop de doo.
I got on one of those airport trains they have now that drop you have at different areas and went to the Ground Transportation area where they told me to. I sat down for a while and didn't see any sign of a van/bus. Eventually a mysterious man comes up to me and asks for a cigarette. I (surprisingly) gave him one and he sat down next to me to talk. We talked a short bit, him repeatedly asking me and the girl next to me if she was my girlfriend (she wasn't. she was however confused). In time it came out that I was waiting for the Marriott bus and he nicely directed me to where I was actually supposed to be standing. What a free cigarette can do!
He started to walk me there until I declined to give him $5 in addition to the cigarette, both of which he generously promised to pay forward...I wasn't feeling generous towards the next person obviously and he went on his way.
Found a bus and then ended up here at the hotel in Atlanta. It has free internet (for 24 hours) which is awesome (so I can you know, blog my time away). I hadn't eaten much so I eventually walked until I found a McDonalds not to far away. I got some food right before they closed the inside register and sat down to eat and watch the Atlanta 11oclock news. Top story was a big Meth bust at house with 4 people arrested I think. They interviewed a neighbor who (though I couldn't hear well) seemed to be saying he was just happy they were caught before the house blew up. By the looks of his teeth I'm sure he's more happy the competition is out (oohh was that bad? nah, i'm only speaking the truth). Next story was about the situation of the police not doing enough aboutt he armed robbery situation. I decided to walk home doin a fake conversation on my cell phone...
Looks like I'm still waiting to use my oh-so-basic Spanish skills...
Update 6/17: Checking out of this hotel and 1 pm. I realized I forgot my USB cord for my camera so I guess I'll use my time before my 8:30 flight to find a Best Buy or something around here so I can buy a memory card reader.

Embarassing photo Thursday's

It may be for the fact that I've spent the past three weeks with 10 and 11 year old's that I've felt a wave of nostalgia come over me. Or for the fact, that I love to reminisce about the "old days". So I thought I'd enlighten your Thursday's with some humorous photo's from the past.

1995 was a great year. First grade, Sega Genesis, and recess were my top priorities. This picture was taken from my Little league team which was named after my Mother's newly opened clothing store called Cama Lee. The store which lasted for about six months before becoming defunct to, well hideous 90's women's fashion. A kiss on the cheek to the one who can point me out.

Every kid in the Tri-state visits the Statue of Liberty at least once during they're elementary school days. I will forever remember this day. Why you may ask? On this day, I lost my beloved Tamagotchi, which I sulked about for approximately four days. If you don't understand what I'm talking about, you either weren't of age to appreciate, or living under the uncool crater that you called your youth.

In high school I used to be punk rock. Actually, I wasn't at all, I did listen to NOFX though. This picture was taken my freshman year during the "initiation". The freshman were "forced" to shave they're heads to let the rest of the school know we were freshman on the hockey team. What's more bad ass than getting your head shaved in a garage in November? GETTING A FUCKING MOHAWK, that's what! I don't know why we couldn't of just wore t-shirts. "Tradition", I suppose. I'm pretty sure this part of high school has been terminated.

A piece of America died today.

Billy Mays (1959-2009)

According to his bio on Wikipedia, Mr. Mays was first discovered at a home show in 1993 by Max Appeal of Orange Glo International. He was hired by the company to promote its products OxiClean, Orange Clean, Orange Glo, and Kaboom for the Home Shopping Network based out of St. Petersburg, Florida. After his rousing success there, the company moved him on to doing infomercials that aired nationwide.

Mrs. Mays has said that she does not expect to release any public statements about her husband’s death in the coming days. Oddly Mr. Mays was a passenger on a US Airways 737 on Saturday that blew out a tire upon landing. He was checked out immediately after the flight and did not request any medical assistance at that time. It is not known if that incident has any connection to his sudden and unexpected passing.

My relationship with Michael Jackson

I was never in love with MJ. It may have been for the fact that I was a late 80's baby or never understood the hype, or thought he was a crazy looking child molester. Either way, he was an incredible artist, no matter how fucking bizarre he looked or acted. Remember that time he hung his child outside of that window in France? Or his relationship with Macaulay Culkin? I feel like this may sound like some falsified rumor attack on the King of Pop, but it's not, that shit actually happened!

When thinking about Micheal Jackson, the first thing that came to mind weren't any of those previously mentioned actions, but the complete opposite however. Weird Al, is what I thought of after hearing the words, MICHEAL JACKSON IS DEAD. When I was about five years old my uncle gave me a Weird Al album that featured songs about food. His rendition of "Beat It" entitled "Eat It" was my favorite song on the album, I had no idea that it was originally a Micheal Jackson song, but after I found out, was when I knew Micheal Jackson was a musical genius.

Phoenix @ Terminal 5. 6.19.09

I won't make this one as long and agonizing as the last review, but I want to let you know how amazing this band is.

I've been waiting for Phoenix to tour for about two years since I discovered It's Never Been Like That used at my local record shop. That album along with they're others are to put it simply, incredible. They're albums that need no skipping and can be played in any mood, temperature, or situation. I'm not sure they're are any bands whose music is able to do that now, or more importantly, ever. I highly recommend, if you haven't already, pick up they're new release called Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix I promise you will not be let down. You can play this record at a party, in the car, or on a rainy day, and it is guaranteed to please.

The show on Friday was exactly what I expected. Great sound, great set list, and overall a good crowd. Which, may I add is one of the most difficult things to accomplish at a concert. There aren't many words that I can use to describe the show or this band besides amazing, incredible, terrific, and spectacular. Take that Rolling Stone.

A review: Metric/Sebastian Grainger & The Mountains @ Terminal5. 6/17/09

When thinking of drummers turned front men, few names come to mind. Phil Collins, Levon Helm, and probably the most famous of this generation, the one and only, Dave Grohl. Unfortunately, Sebastien Grainger (ex-Death From Above 1979) has yet to barely hit the drum head of this list of all-star composers. Sebastien along with his backing band, the Mountains filled the opening slot for the beloved Canadian supergroup, Metric at Terminal 5, Wednesday night.

Dressed in a conservative mad scientist costumes, Sebastien and the band ran through a string of heavy distortion tunes that seemed to bleed into one another. A major reason why anyone at the show seemed to pay attention to this band was because of Sebastien's past and now defunct project, DFA1979. The single off Sebastian's self titled album, "Who do we care for?" seemed to be the tune that had the crowd nodding they're heads paying attention to the stage instead of their cell phones. The track which inspired the crowd to actually watch the stage instead of aimlessly gazing at the gigantic disco ball hanging above their heads.

Don't get me wrong, Sebastien's songs are well crafted and diabolical. However, live, the only highlight of the show is watching men dressed up as scientists playing guitars. Something that get's old after the first two or three songs. One can acknoledge his influence of thrash and grungy guitar riffs that were used heavily with DFA1979. What made DFA1979, so special was that there weren't any guitar lines. It was just two Canadian guys with long hair that seemed to be having a great time. Something, we weren't used to.

Who Do We Care For

After realizing that this show was sold out and one that numerous Purchase kids could be found at. (I'm pretty sure I saw the working crew from the bookstore outside.) You know who I'm talking about, the ones who always seem to be a little too lethargic and make it seem that they're always having the worst day of they're lives? After about twenty five minutes waiting around for Metric to set-up. They briskly and athletically performed mostly material from they're new album, "Fantasies" which recently just went gold. "Fantasies", which compared to older albums is more polished and according to Emily Haines, a record about finding a new identity. Seemed to go over well with the New York city audience. I was pleasantly surprised at the crowd's response to the newer material, which was tremendously positive.

One great aspect of Metric's live performance is they're ability to keep the audience on it's feet and wondering where they're heading next. The band doesn't switch from one song to another and introduce it with a title and the adjacent album that it was featured on. They re-work the songs and change around arrangements which I find highly interesting. Now, you may be thinking why I chose to use the word athletically to describe the set. The singer, Emily Haines has an incredible way of performing that makes her resemble a Pilate instructor after consuming an ice cream cone filled with cocaine.

Haines who is never idle for a moment during the show, is on key for every note, never moving off pitch while dancing and working out like she was Jane Fonda. Another highlight of the set was Emily's abstract ramblings about humans at zoo's eating cheeseburgers. I'm not exactly sure what she was talking about but it still provided for a captivating performance by one of today's best rock n roll bands.
